The Pale Chronicles: Part 15

“MOM! MOM!” I screamed at the top of my lungs.

My heart was racing and the sheets of my bed were soaked with sweat. I heard my mother calling my name and her footsteps getting closer and closer. My mom opened the door to my tiny bedroom and gave me one of her beautiful smiles. Instantly, I felt relief and safety.

My mom was a smaller woman and had the same blonde hair I had. She was extremely beautiful, and had the greenest eyes I’ve ever seen. Her hair was messy from sleep and she looked exhausted.

“Ez, are you okay? Did you have a bad dream baby?” Asked my mother as she began walking towards me.

“Don’t call me that! I’m not a baby anymore, mom.” I demanded. My mother’s grin grew wider.

“Oh my mistake. I keep forgetting you are a big strong man now.” Replied my mom while imitating a big muscled up guy flexing.

“Mom?” I asked my mother quietly.

Mom stopped her pretend flexing. “What is it Ez, everything alright?”

I wasn’t sure why I was feeling so nervous and flustered. “Is father here?”

“Well, of course he…” My mother began to say.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Someone was pounding on the front door furiously. Mom’s face became very serious. “Ez get under your bed and don’t come out until me or your father come get you!”

My mother rushed to my bedroom door. Right before opening the door she looked back at me and gave me a brave smile. “I love you Ez.”

With that my mom exited my bedroom and slammed it shut behind her. I quickly crawled under my bed as far under it as I could go. I could hear my father’s heavier footsteps walking to the front door and opening it.

The shouting and screaming could probably be heard sectors away. Then the sound of gunfire was so loud it was hurting my ears. The screams of my mother echoed through my mind… I hid my face with my hands trying not to sob out in fear.

Suddenly, there was no more screaming. There was no noise at all. I opened my eyes. No longer was I under the bed in my room. I was in the same house, but was in our small living room/kitchen. My mother was in the kitchen making some kind of food. In front of me was someone I only had a few memories of, my big sister. She looked to be about only 6 or 7. Her hair was a beautiful golden blonde, and her eyes were the same blue as mine. My sister was running around me in circles, laughing the whole time.

As I looked at her young face I became filled with incredible sadness. She suddenly stopped running, and stood in front of me with a puzzled look on her face. “Aren’t you going to play with me Ez?” Asked my sister.

I was in such shock I couldn’t speak. The only thing I could manage to do was to grab a hold of her, and hug her as hard as I could. Abruptly, out of nowhere, she pushed me away extremely hard while looking at me with a scary possessed look on her face.

“Why did you let me go brother? Why?” Inquired my sister with a sinister voice.

“Stop, please!” I sobbed.

My sister got in my face and started to jab me in the chest over and over again, while screaming, “Why? Why? WHY?”.

I burst awake and realized that I was the one actually screaming. I sat up as fast as I could. My head was pounding and was spinning all at the same time.

“Ezzy! It’s okay, we’re all okay! You’re in the medical room, buddy!” Shouted Grady.

Grady! The big guy was alive! I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited in my life. Honestly, I think this beats going into space for the first time. Finally I gained some focus and realized I was in one of the smaller medical rooms. Slowly I got off the medical table and started making my way to Grady. The big fella was sitting up on the table with the biggest smile I had ever seen.

I stopped in front of my old friend. Grady and myself just stared at each other for a few seconds without moving. We both had dumb looking smirks on our faces. Then at the same time we cheered together in celebration like a couple guys that just won a million chips! I ran over and gave Grady a huge hug that was probably a little too hard.

“Ouch! Watch it man!” Grady yelped out in pain. I quickly backed off and took a look at his wound.

His shoulder was all bandaged up and his arm was in a sling. Grady was holding his wound and wincing a bit. The wince then turned into a chuckle.

“Be honest, did you think you were going to die?” I asked Grady seriously.

“Oh I’ll be honest, I thought we were all gonna die.” Grady blurted out while continuing to chuckle.

Just as I was about to respond, the main door slid open with Eps and Tykka standing on the other side of it. “Well, well, if it isn’t the dynamic duo back in action once again.” Eps taunted sarcastically.

It was good to see everyone had made it out alive. “What can I say? We’re hard to kill.” I retorted.

Eps and Tykka started to walk into the room. Eps had his usual nasty grin on his face, and Tykka looked grim. “Oh, I don’t doubt it. We were just coming to inform you that we’re about to land soon. And to see if you two were okay of course.” Eps declared.

Uh, excuse me, what? “Land? What do you mean land?” I asked, confused as ever. “Land where?”

Eps laughed. “A place you warmed blooded folk just love.” Eps cackled loudly.

“Spit it out! Where are we landing?” I demanded.

“Adrid, the ice planet.” Eps gleamed.
